Vauxhall Mallards had mixed results at the weekend, losing to Cambridge Granta in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League before beating Cromer in the final of the Bob Carter/NACO Cup.

Heavy overnight rain meant that the wicket and outfield at Clare College were too damp for play to start on time on Saturday and an hour’s delay was needed for them to dry.

As a consequence the overs in the match were reduced to 46 per side from 50, with Granta winning the toss and electing to field first.

Mallards’ batsmen struggled to get runs on the board, the only significant scores coming from a stand of 65 from Mitchell Todd (40) and captain, Alistair Shearer (42). The side were bowled out for 146 with 3.2 overs still to go.

Despite losing their two openers cheaply, Cambridge batted well to comfortably chase down the runs with Michael Pepper (49) and captain Jonathan Atkinson (55) getting two thirds of them. Granta had plenty of time, overs and wickets in hand to overhaul Mallards’ total to take the win.

The Bob Carter/NACO Cup final was held at Old Buckenham on Sunday. It was another low scoring game, each side following a similar pattern with wickets falling at similar stages of their innings but with overall advantage to Vauxhall Mallards. Cromer put Mallards in to bat and they made 156, without using the full quota of overs.

Mitchell Todd hit 43 and Tom Miller a quick 23 but the 37 extras from Cromer were a significant amount in the total. James Craske bowled well for Cromer, his 5-33 off 10 overs earning him the man of the match award.

Cromer needed only to bat steadily to reach their target but Mallards’ opening pair Ben France (4 for 11) and Adam Todd (2 for 23) had them in trouble quickly.

By the 15th over they were 34 for six and although David Turner kept the runs coming when he was bowled for 44 by Shearer the prospects for Cromer didn’t look good.

The bowlers kept up the pressure and Cromer were all out for 110. The trophy went to Vauxhall Mallards to round off a good weekend as the club’s third XI, in their first year in the league, had celebrated winning the Norfolk Cricket League Division 4 South East title the day before.

Mallards welcome Great Witchingham to Halvergate on Saturday (11am).
