Vauxhall Mallards did not get the result they wanted on Saturday on their visit to Great Witchingham in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian League.

Mallards were all out for 159 in 59.4 overs and the Witches passed that modest total in the 35th over for the lost of five wickets.

Mallards were put in to bat on a sunny morning and had lost seven wickets by the lunch break for only 109 runs. Their first three batsmen went for low scores, the damage being done by James Spelman and Mike Jones.

John Ewart, batting at number five, kept Mallards in the game. He batted with six different partners, making most of the runs to get Mallards from 44-3 to 136-9. His 65 included seven boundaries and four massive sixes.

Jones finished with the best figures of the match with 5-53 off 18 overs with four maidens.

Great Witchingham batted steadily from the start but with such a small total to chase down there was no need for a faster approach.

Sam Arthurton anchored the innings as he made 57 before he lost his wicket to Luke Caswell with the first ball of his spell. He was caught behind by keeper Harry Barker, who took another two bringing his total of EAPL catches in the last two matches to seven.

Great Witchingham didn’t look in any difficulty and reached the total with 24 overs to spare, when Jones hit a match winning six.

Mallards had had a better day during the week when they beat Brooke in their first Norfolk T20 match in defence of their title at Horsford.

They made 211-4, Mitchell Todd hitting 124 off 62 balls. Brooke batted out their 20 overs but fell short on 177-7.

Mallards are back in EAPL action tomorrow, with bottom of the table Bury St Edmunds providing the opposition at Halvergate.

It was a day to forget for Great Yarmouth in Division One of the Norfolk League as they were dismissed for just 61 by visitors Castle Rising. Openers Matthew Sole (19) and Simon Ruddick (31) took the home side up to 51 without loss before a complete collapse saw them skittled out. Castle Rising went on to win by nine wickets.

Caister went marching on in Division 2E when they dismissed Gillingham for 110 after making 175-6 (Paul Brown 72). Halvergate also took the points after Cringleford conceded.
