The final stages of the Over-60s open singles sponsored by firstbet.com were played on Tuesday at the Yarmouth Bowls Festival.

The final, played in cold and windy conditions, was between Chris Ward of North Walsham and Richard Eglington of Reepham Private.

The game was close after seven ends with Eglington leading 6-5 before he posted a three on the eighth end to move to a 9-6 lead.

He then produced some high-class conversion shots with his last bowl and after 13 ends had taken a 17-8 lead.

But Ward then secured the shot on the next end and as his right he then gave the jack away. This tactic changed the game around to his advantage. With both players playing high class bowls, the advantage of last bowl he gradually took the initiative away from Eglington and at 18 ends still being to his lead was 17-16.

However, Ward, with the last bowl of the end and laying one shot up, moved the jack to score a full count of four shots to lead 20-17, and he then scored the one shot required on the next end to win 21-17 and claim the championship.

In his semi-final, Ward had beaten Derek Cowie of Felixstowe 21-11. In the other semi-final Eglington played Peter Scott (Thetford) and was 10-1 up after six ends and always held the upper hand running out the winner by 21-12.

The losing quarter-finalist were Frank Ray (County Arts), Peter Driver ( Great Yarmouth), Stan Smith (Lowestoft) and the only lady in the quarter-finals Gwen Burke from Kent.
