GREAT Yarmouth Town, leading the promotion chase from the first division of the Ridgeons League, tomorrow host FC Clacton at the Wellesley (3pm).

The Suffolk club are vying for promotion and, after inflicting one of only two league defeats on the Bloaters this season, have lost only one league match themselves this campaign.

With the Clacton side fourth, 15 points behind Yarmouth but with six games in hand, it looks a great encounter.

Cornard United 2, Great Yarmouth Town 2

LEAGUE leaders the Bloaters drew at lowly Cornard after twice coming from behind. There was a shock recall for defender Gareth Palmer as Steve Best was suspended, whilst Woodcock and Reed were preferred to Saunders and Norman.

Goalkeeper Michael Hilton pulled off a wonderful save in the 17th minute, despite the east Norfolk side's dominance in the opening 20 minutes.

The game turned as midfielder Martyn Magee was taken off injured, and with no recognised midfielder on the bench forward Gavin Norman was forced into a makeshift midfield role. The home side then began to come more into the game and were rewarded in the 31st minute with an excellent strike which hit a post before crossing the line.

Shortly after Yarmouth was level after tenacious battling from Jake Reed, who dispossessed a defender in the Cornard defensive corner and crossed for Stewart Roach to bundle home.

Within three minutes Cornard were again celebrating after a lapse in defence allowed Dan Stokers a sight at goal and the striker expertly chipped Hilton.

In the second half Yarmouth upped the tempo and thought they had equalised in the 50th minute through Scott Woodcock, only to find his strike ruled out for offside. But a minute later Craig Roberts scored with a header from a Yarmouth corner.

The other main talking point was a bad challenge on Roberts in the 65th minute in the Yarmouth box which angered the Yarmouth players, Hilton receiving a yellow card for his demonstrating.

The New Year's raffle will now be drawn during the Legends match on April 18, tickets still available for prizes including a Manchester United shirt signed by the 2008/9 title-winning squad, a Chelsea shirt signed by their squad of the same season and a signed Great Yarmouth Town shirt signed by the current squad.

Squad for Cornard United match: M Hilton, J King (B Junior), O Savage, C Roberts, G Palmer, M Magee (G Norman), L Fell (F Vide), D Smith, S Roach, J Reed, S Woodcock. All subs used.
