Thetford 0, Broadland–Great Yarmouth 10

RUGBY: With Thetford struggling at the bottom of the league this should have been an easy win for the Great Yarmouth side.

The first half was a highly defensive affair, with Jamie Alfshinpour making a last-ditch tackle to prevent a Thetford score. Some hard work in the forwards, notably from Matt Beckett and Kieran Wilkes, drove the ball towards the Thetford 22 line, and with a penalty awarded Tom Weston kicked the first points of the game.

Broadland’s defence was rock-solid as Thetford were struggling to break the gain line. Broadland were however making some inroads into the Thetford half.

A well-crafted move set Tom Weston clear and he side-stepped the wing then the full-back before diving over to score (converted Weston).

Broadland continued to apply pressure and a last-minute drop-goal attempt from Weston drifted wide, leaving the Yarmouth side with a comfortable win.

However, when the Southwold prop went down, Southwold were unable to field another front row and the match went to uncontested scrums.

Broadland continued to push hard. A dazzling run from Jay Pollard brought the ball in close, Steve Weston went near to a score, but it was prop Jimmy Dwyer who drove through to score (unconverted).

Southwold countered, a kick-and-chase yielding them a converted try, which was followed by a penalty.

Broadland moved the ball steadily back into the Southwold half and centre Ant Payne made really good ground from midfield.

Broadland again played it tight at the goal-line and Pat Finney squeezed through to score (unconverted), the half ending 10-10.

Broadland were on the receiving end of two well-worked Southwold counter-attacks, It was a frustrating period as Abel, Weston and Morrison all crossed the goal-line but were unable to score.
