Summer is moving on apace and the knock-out season in both club and county competitions at Gorleston Golf Club is in full swing.

Saturday saw the annual Past Club Captains’ 10 Hhle competition followed by a meal and much camaraderie.

Taking part were 18 past club captains and the years they held office ranged from Jim Stannard (1970) to special invitee Stuart Low, the current club captain.

Sunday’s men’s Monthly Medal and Drughorn Qualifier produced some impressive scoring, with the results as follows: Division One: Kevin Woods 66. Division Two: Howard Thornton 67 and Division Three: Leon Sears 70.

On Wednesday the Ladies’ Section played their Hannah Lock Spoons Trophy competition. In this competition a trophy is awarded to the winner of each division. The winners this year were: Division One: Pauline Phillips 76, Division Two: Kim Potter 74 and Division Three: Maggie Hart.

Thursday’s Midweek Stableford competition winners were Division One: Andy Clifford 40 points and Division Two: Ivan Harvey 40 points, both excellent scores.

The men’s Beaumont Trophy Team played their second round in the County Knockout Competition. Their opponents on this occasion were the team from Woodbridge Golf Club.

Many congratulations are due to the Gorleston Team (Colin Laws, Les Dukes, Wayman Arundel, Alan Attoe, Peter Aldred, Ray Pope, Ivan Harvey and team captain Keith Wright), who were the victors on the day with a great winning score of six holes which takes them forward to the next round.

Wednesday saw the Ladies’ Section play the Australian Spoons Foursomes National Qualifier which was won by the pairing of Heather Harvey and Jackie Walsh and everyone at the club wishes them good luck in the Regional Final.

The second Norfolk men’s championship event of the season takes place at King’s Lynn Golf Club tomorrow, with the higher handicapped players taking centre stage.

The County Handicap Championship is always a popular event and has attracted an impressive field of 66, with the action getting under way at 7.51am. James Colclough will be flying the flag for Great Yarmouth and Caister in the 36-hole event.
