Woodlands Primary School have been presented with the Great Yarmouth Schools Football Association league trophy. The boys team from Year 6 have played and trained since September, and have had a fantastic season, winning all nine matches and scoring over 50 goals.
Woodlands Primary School have been presented with the Great Yarmouth Schools Football Association league trophy. The boys team from Year 6 have played and trained since September, and have had a fantastic season, winning all nine matches and scoring over 50 goals.
Ten schools from the Yarmouth area and east coast participate in the league, which is the top age group, and the first age for 11-a-side football.
Coaches Stuart Aldous and Damian Ainslie praised the squad's commitment, with 19 players turning up every week for eight months to train no matter the conditions, and working hard to improve their game and fitness levels.
The team played attractive passing football with a positive attitude towards each other and the opposition, whilst demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout the season.
Highlights include a last-minute win against Caister in the first match of the season, and memorable wins in the final two matches against Cliff Park and Martham to take the title.
Woodlands narrowly missed out on the double after an excellent cup final with Wroughton, who edged it at a penalty shoot out.
The school last won the league in 2007, when it was then a middle school.
In a special full school assembly, with parents in attendance, the squad were presented with the new trophy, the first winners since reorganisation. Great Yarmouth Schools FA secretary Graham Gibbons spoke at the presentation, which showed photographs of the team in action, before Mr Barham of trophy sponsors Gorleston Rotary Club, presented the shield.
The squad were treated to a celebratory meal and team awards the previous evening.
Most improved player was top goalscorer Isaac Kirby, manager's player was the ever reliable defender Ashley Hudson, whilst players' player went to goalkeeper Max Chilvers.
The team thanked their parents for their support all season and for travelling to away games.
