The 2010 Great Yarmouth Schools Football Association seven-a-side tournament took place last Saturday hosted by Woodlands Primary School.

Nine schools from the association participated to a very high standard. The event was well supported by parents and friends.

Group One saw Hemsby finish off in first place with runners-up Cliff Park. They were closely followed by Martham, Caister and Hillside.

Group Two was also well contested with Peterhouse, and Ormesby both improving each game, but the qualifiers were Wroughton and group leaders Woodlands.

The semi-final between Cliff Park and Woodlands went to penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time. But it was Woodlands who won the shoot-out to face Hemsby, who had beaten Wroughton in the semi-finals.

This was a fantastic achievement by Hemsby who are competing in the GYSFA for the first time in many years,

The final turned out to be a sporting occasion with some high-quality possession football all round, but it was Woodlands who broke the deadlock and went on to pick up the trophy for the second successive year.

Woodlands now go through to play in the county final of this English Schools national event, along with their Girls’ team who also won the Great Yarmouth event last month.

The trophies were presented by the association secretary, Graham Gibbons.
