POWERLIFTER Matt Saunders overcame injury to triumph in the World Championships in Ireland at the weekend.

Great Yarmouth-based Saunders won a 14th successive title despite not being able to train for several weeks with a back injury.

Trailing a Russian competitor in the squat, Saunders pulled level with the bench press and clinched victory in his class and competition with a 320k dead lift.

Saunders said: “I expected to struggle in the dead lift, but achieved more than I thought possible. After injuring my back I was not able to squat and dead lift for a month and it was very touch and go if I could take part.

“I would like to give special thanks to my trainer Scott Graysmark and Top Body gym owner Dean McTernan.”
