OVAL RACING: Reigning world champion Colin Aylward proved he was still the man to beat in the superstox class at the Yarmouth Stadium last Sunday, writes Graham Utting.

The first heat went the way of Martyn Coles who was making his track debut following a very successful career in another formula.

But after this the night belonged to Aylward as he forced his way from the back of the grid to take victory in the second heat.

With the car handling so well on the new Caister road Tarmac, he looked in a class of his own and went on to take the East Anglian Championship final.

Great Yarmouth’s Mark Smith produced one of his best drives for a while, finshing second ahead of Felsham Garages’ Garry Sparkes.

A good field of 1300cc stock cars made for some exciting racing with local drivers James Radcliffe and Ashley Kenny both dealt with very early in their first race. with Kenny getting airborn after collecting a marker tyre in a very spectacular incident.

Jason Scopes took the win after being chased hard by world champion Barry Radcliffe in the closing stages, Radcliffe then going one better in taking the next race and the final.

Sussex driver Brandon Osbourne made sure his brand-new ministox went as well as it looked, taking a heat win and the final, with Norwich’s Kyle Picton victorious in the other heat.

An excellent grid of 25 bangers produced some action-packed racing.

Experienced Yarmouth racer Nigel Walker won the opening race in a very well-prepared Honda Civic.

Gary Foreman drove well to take the following heat before Yarmouth’s Steven Sipka, having had a very unusual start to the final, went on to prove he was the better man by taking a well-earned victory to end a very good start to the stock car racing season at the Yarmouth Stadium.
