The Great Yarmouth Table Tennis League's town championships started on Tuesday at Northgate with the singles event.Players were drawn into two groups and with a smaller entry best of three games were played.

Players were drawn into two groups and with a smaller entry best of three games were played. With the top players all engaged, competition was fierce.

Group A had Paul Wright jnr stake his claim to the title when he beat both Wally Ladmore and Martin Peek.

Albert Cadmore from the second division, playing in his first championship, found the opposition difficult but a good grounding for when he plays next season in the higher division. He thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Group B was weakened with the late withdrawal of Ryan Moore. Ernie George took the top place followed by Ray Lee who defeated Paul Wright snr. Reg Cadmore battled well but was unable to register a win.

The semi-finals had Ernie George play Martin Peek, and although he took the first game at l5, Martin raised his game only to lose on deuce in the second. Paul jnr was too good for Ray Lee, running out the winner 21-15 21-6.

Paul maintained this good form in the final and went to a 6-1 lead, but back fought Ernie to 11-14 only for Paul to take the initiative again to take the first game 21-14.

Ernie raised his game at the start of the second but the desire to win inspired Paul who attacked fiercely and retrieved exceptional angled balls from Ernie. He ran out a very worthy winner 21-16 to take the title.

Chairman Albert Cadmore thanked Charlie Hacon and Edna Fletcher for officiating, and the helpers who set out the equipment.
