Mike Derbyshire is urging his Yarmouth Town players to use the battling Senior Cup performance against Gorleston as a springboard for revival in the league.

“I think people fully expected us to roll over but as good a performance as it was it was still a defeat and it won’t mean anything if we don’t go on and get some league results.”

Tomorrow the rock-bottom Bloaters, who are without a win in 15 games, travel to Newmarket – the team nearest to them in the Ridgeons League Premier Division. It is a classic relegation six-pointer. The Jockeys were beaten 4-0 by fellow strugglers Wivenhoe in midweek.

Derbyshire, who only has three of the players he inherited in September still at the Wellesley, has struggled to build a settled team following a stream of player departures to other clubs.

The recent axing of the players’ budget for financial reasons means that players who join the Bloaters are playing only for pride.

But despite a mountain of difficulties the upbeat Derbyshire can now see some light at the end of the tunnel.

“We have started to get to the point where I am going to have some selection problems,” he said.

Relegation is by no means a foregone conclusion.

“If we can put some results together we’ll be right back in the mix. We have got some good players at the club.

“We have got more than enough about us to get ourselves out of trouble,” he maintained.
