GREAT Yarmouth fell to their second successive Norfolk League Division One defeat on Saturday as they finished 28 runs short in a very low-scoring affair.

Overnight rain had livened up the Beaconsfield, making batting problematic at best.

And having won the toss, Yarmouth had no hesitation in asking Caister to bat first. Kerrison and Johnson made a lively start but both were quickly back in the pavilion, both victims of surprising bounce.

Green and Stokes steadied the ship and had taken the score to 61 before Green was snapped up at short leg, to give Noakes his first wicket.

Green’s 22 turned out to be the highest score of the match. Sims played a trademark agricultural heave for six over cow corner before being cleaned up by Noakes, who then struck again two balls later to leave Caister 68 for five.

Stokes (19) and some late-order hitting from Myhill (11) helped Caister through to 108, with Oxborough (2-16) and Vickers (4-27) removing the tail, the last-wicket partnership being notable for some industrial-scale landscape gardening on a good length.

Yarmouth’s reply started solidly, with Fitzsimmons (20) taking the lead in an opening partnership of 33.

This was the only partnership to reach double figures in the innings.

Fitzsimmons was first to fall, inside edging a Kerrison delivery onto pads and then onto stumps. The intimidating Sims then got the wicket his pressure had demanded when Hak (4) was adjudged leg before by the under-fire umpire.

Kerrison and Sims shared the first six wickets with only Sole (11) and Hodds (13) able to reach double figures. Yarmouth were up against it at 61 for six.

Kerrison and Sims were bowled out and there were to be no heroics against the Caister change bowling as Yarmouth were all out for just 81.
