On Saturday five athletes from the Great Yarmouth and District Athletic Club competed in the England Schools Cross-Country Championships in Manchester, having gained selection for their county from two trial races.

The course at Manchester after several days rain was extremely challenging with several athletes coming to grief in the muddy conditions, and with numbers approaching 400 runners per race it all added to the challenge.

In the junior girls' section Catherine Lee representing Cliff Park School for the Norfolk Schools Athletic Association was the first finisher for Norfolk, in 157th place.

Kelly Pywell, from Yarmouth High School, also gave a good account of herself in finishing 198th, the third Norfolk runner home.

In the junior boys' section Dominic Oliver, running for Suffolk Schools, finished in 160th place, Kyle Ella from Yarmouth High School finished 176th and Keelan Pywell also from Yarmouth High finished 204th.

Despite having a really good start, a couple of bad falls during the race put an end to hopes of a much higher finishing position.
