Young ace Taylor Adams (pictured) enjoyed the opportunity of a lifetime as he locked horns with Britain's finest young players at the HSBC Wee Wonders Grand Final at St Andrews.

The Bradwell schoolboy, who beat off competition from a record number of 3,800 competitors to qualify for Scotland, just missed out on a podium finish with rounds of 49 and 50 over the nine-hole course.

Taylor, who plays at Gorleston Golf Club, finished tenth on the testing St Andrews fairways, and the six-year-old is already dreaming of a return in 2009 to land the top prize.

“I started playing two years ago and people were really surprised with how good I was,” he said. “I didn't care about what they said, I was enjoying myself, so I kept playing.

“It was great to qualify for the final event in St Andrews and I had a lot of fun playing on the course.

“It is such a famous place and all my other friends who play golf are jealous because they would love to play here.

“I have had such a great time - I really enjoy playing golf and would love to play every day of the week.”

Wee Wonders founder Alasdair Good - regarded as one of the world's best junior coaches, hailed the 106-strong field in Scotland and predicted Taylor could one day return to St Andrews as an Open champion.

“To get to play St Andrews is every golfer's dream,” he said. “There aren't many junior tennis tournaments that get to play at Wimbledon on Centre Court, or football at Wembley so golf is the exception.

“In the years to come I'm sure we'll see Taylor lifting the Claret Jug and I'll be delighted they can say I got into golf playing the Wee Wonders.”

HSBC is committed to growing golf at grassroots level and in the UK supports a number of initiatives, including the HSBC Wee Wonders tournament; open to young golfers aged between five and 12.
