So now the figure is set to play a towering role at Bank “Wally Day” on Monday, May 31.

Yarmouth will be hoping for the largest gathering of people dressed as Wally in another attempt at a Guinness World Record.

A previous attempt last year was so near, yet so far, with 901 people donning the red and white striped t-shirt and bobble hat despite more than 1,200 costumes being sold.

Volunteers, Louise and Gabby King and Emily Pywell gave the print a clean up and coat of paint before it is suspended from the Market Place on May 31.

Originally completed by children from St Nicholas Primary School, the banner was looking worse for wear after being placed on the roof of Market Gates shopping centre in an effort to be caught on Google Earth.

Town centre manager Jonathan Newman said: “There was a great deal of interest in the 15m painting of Wally from passers-by and he was quite a talking point throughout the day as the volunteers were regularly asked when the next record attempt was taking place.

“Wally is now safely back in storage waiting for Bank Wally Day Monday when it is hoped that we can suspend him from the upper floors of one of the buildings around the Market Place for the Guinness World record attempt.”

In preparation for the day another 1,000 t-shirts and bobble hats have been ordered for potential 'Wallys' who haven't already got a costume.

According to Guinness World Records the current record is 1,052 people achieved by Rutgers University at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, on April 2, 2009.

Anyone wishing to take part will need to register online at www.gytcp.co.uk/wally or at Boots, Books Inside or Palmers department store in the Market Place.

Registering will cost 1 per person which is being equally split between two charities: MacMillan Cancer Care and the Have a Heart Appeal which gives money to local children's charities.

Where's Wally costumes can also be ordered from each of the shops listed.

The record attempt is also being supported by Heart FM.
