A rallying call has gone out for singers, bands, choirs and musicians to perform in a summer seafront concert.

The annual Gorleston Makes Music event showcases talent in front of picnic-style crowds at Gorleston’s bandstand - with cash prizes for the finalists taking to the stage.

Auditions are in July, and organisers from the Gorleston Rotary Club have launched their appeal for entries to take part in this summer’s extravaganza.

Event team leader Mike Getvoldsen said: “We do the event to give singers and musicians the chance to gain experience of performing in public.

“While we get lots of solo singers, we would like to attract more choirs, bands and musicians. We have had sea shanty choirs, barber shop singers, school choirs, and rock bands in the past.”

The competition, which is now in its fifth year, offers a £250 cash prize - sponsored by Westgate Fastenings - to the winners, with £100 and £50 for the second and third placed acts. The other three finalists get £25 each.

Auditions are on Thursday, July 13 from at East Norfolk Sixth Form Centre from 4pm to 8pm.

The judges include DJ Richard Harrison and former finalist Gabriella Harvey-Mobbs. Some non-finalists can be invited to perform between acts on finals day, which is on Sunday, August 20 starting at 1pm.

Last year’s event was won by the singer-songwriter George Wilson from Aylsham. Some of the other winners have gone on to music college and to perform on cruise ships.

Rotary also stages the event to make use of the bandstand which it fundraised for built to mark the centenary of the worldwide friendship and charity club in 2006. Last year £200 was also collected at the final for Rotary charities.

Other main prize sponsors for this year’s event are Norton Peskett Solicitors and East Norfolk Sixth Form College in Gorleston.

Entries should be emailed to stuarthall1947@live.co.uk by the deadline of June 30. Any entries aged under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
