Young actors and singers are being offered the chance to sample the fun of taking part in a famous rock opera.

St George’s Theatre at Great Yarmouth is planning to stage Jesus Christ Superstar this spring.

But there is a taster session at workshop, open to allcomers aged from 14 to 25, at the theatre in King Street on Sunday January 28 from 2pm.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “This is a wonderful chance to explore the songs in this fabulous, colourful and poignant musical.

“The session will also work on vocal harmonies and the creation of dance routines. We would love to see lots of young people who want to learn about the show, and musical theatre in general, through a fun experience,” she added.

They could even end up in the cast for the show, which is the debut production by a new musical theatre youth group at the venue - a converted historic church which is now a busy arts centre.

The workshop is being run by show director Nick Ball, who is programme leader for Performing Arts at East Coast College.

Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last week of Jesus’ life and includes hits such as Superstar and I Don’t Know How to Love Him.

It was written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber initially as a rock opera “concept album” in 1970, then launched as a stage show the following year and adapted into a film in 1973 and 2000.

A recent stage version included radio presenter Chris Moyles, former Spice Girl Mel C and Ben Foster, who won the Superstar TV talent show in 2012 to land the part of Jesus.

Principal roles include: Jesus, Pontius Pilate, Herod, Mary Magdelene, Judas Iscariote, apostles Peter and Simon, and some “soul girls.”

The youth group will also be looking to find behind-the-scenes crew too, dealing with scenery, props, lighting, sound, make-up and costumes.

Jesus Christ Superstar will run from April 11th to 13th, nightly at 7.30pm.
