In May, 25 of the county's most historic churches will be taking in part in the art alive in churches event to show off their splendours.

The legend of the fearsome Ludham worm will be the basis of a dragon trial in churches on the Norfolk Broads involving designs by local children, the Norwich Puppet Theatre, and work by artists Linda Matthews and Katie Hawks.

Maz Jackson, an egg tempera artist, will be showing off her egg-based creations in St Mary, Wiveton, and sculptor David Holgate will be creating animal based pieces at St Mary Church, Aldeby.

During art alive, which runs from Saturday, May 23 to Monday, May 25, churches in north Norfolk will be hosting a Paston Letters themed exhibition and churches around Norwich will have a guilds based theme.

Exhibits will include stained glass window artists, wool and basket weavers, gold smiths, book binders and wood carvers and visitors can also take part in craft work shops.

The Bank Holiday event has been organised by the Diocese of Norwich and Norfolk County Council and is being supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Rt Rev Graham James, Lord Bishop of Norwich, said: “Norfolk is unique with 648 historic churches - more than anywhere else in the world.

“Art alive is an excellent initiative by promoting the architectural and artistic beauty of our churches and inspiring people to explore the special nature of these spiritual treasures.”

John Gretton, county councillor responsible for cultural services, said: “Art alive will encourage people to discover Norfolk's rich medieval heritage and take part in a celebration of the county's arts and crafts.”
