Members of Gorleston based Dusmagrik Young People’s Theatre Company are purrfecting their moves for their next production - the all singing, all dancing musical Cats.
The show, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by TS Eliot and has only recently been made available for performance by schools and youth groups.
The show’s director, Mary Carter said: “Dusmagrik are delighted to be among the first to do the production. It is a wonderful opportunity for our members. They are getting the chance to perform one of the best musicals ever written.”
Cats opened in the West End on May 11 1981 and went on to become the longest running musical in the history of West End theatre. It tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who gather together once a year on a rubbish dump so that their leader, Old Deuteronmy, can choose one of them to ascend to to the “heavyside layer” to be reborn. The various cats introduce themselves to the audience and tell their own stories and act out a battle between dogs for the entertainment of their leader. Most people will be familiar with the song Memory which is sung by Grizabella, the faded glamour cat.
Dusmagrik’s November show raises money for Children in Need.
The show will be presented at the Pavilion Theatre Gorleston from Thursday November 20-22 at 7.30pm nightly with a matinee on the second day at 2pm. Tickets via the box office on 01493 662832 or on-line at www.gorlestonpavilion.com.
