Events run

This year the trail is sited in Gorleston and consists of looking for clues both on the way to, and in, 13 public houses with some lovely walks incorporating the cliff area, harbour and river views and parts of the bustling High Street.

The trail can be walked in approximately two hours but will take double that time for hunting all the clues. A buffet has been laid on at the halfway point to aid flagging treasure hunters. The start is the Cliff Hotel from 12.30pm. Teams will leave at regular intervals, with the last starting slot no later than 2pm.

A spokesman for the society said: “All landlords/landladies have been really helpful for this event and are looking forward to welcoming treasure hunters to all their establishments. Some of the pubs are also looking to put their own teams in as well.”

Entry is �4 per person with teams consisting of three to five people. Funds will also be raised for Caister Lifeboat and there will be prizes for the winning teams. There is a maximum of 20 teams so first come, first served.

l The Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Ladies Lifeboat Guild are holding a Celebrity Chef Luncheon on Wednesday, October 27, at Zest Restaurant in Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton.

Those attending will be given a cookery demonstration by Richard Hughes of The Lavendar House restaurant in Brundall. Tickets are available for this fundraising lunch from Mrs Cooper on 01493 664570.

l Martham Christmas Fayre will take place on Saturday, November 27, and run from 11am to 4pm in the large marquee on the village green. If you would like to have a charity or craft stall at this event please contact Julie Beales on 01493 748547.

l The Nelson Museum will be holding a charity bingo night on Thursday with eyes down at 7.30pm. The cost of the evening will be �5 including all bingo cards and light refreshments. There will be no cash prizes as it is for charity, but there are a range of prizes for lucky winners and a raffle as well. The Nelson Museum is an independent museum and registered charity and is solely reliant on admission fees and donations to keep the doors open. Funds from the bingo will go to the museum which houses more than 2,000 items relating to Admiral Lord Nelson. Visitors to the museum can find out more about Nelson and his remarkable life and career as well as his tragic death and inspirational leadership. l This weekend will see two Gorleston St Andrew’s Competitive Festival events taking place.

A free singing workshop takes place tomorrow at the Chapter House, St Andrew’s Church, Gorleston between 10.30am and 3pm, led by Vetta Wise. Contact the co-ordinator on 01493 601740.

The Festival Winners’ Lunchtime Recital will be held at the Old Granary Studio, Maypole Green, Toft Monks and will start at 1pm on Sunday. Vidas Vaitkevicius, (piano), senior recital winner and Maxim Calver, (cello), Festival Musician of the Year will both perform a varied programme selection. Tickets cost �5 and will be available on the door.

l Paul McCulloch will be the organist at Great Yarmouth Keyboard Music Club’s next meeting, on October 20, at the Masonic Assembly Rooms at 7.45pm.

Merseyside born Mr McCulloch learned to read music and play an instrument at the same time as his father and brother. All progressed well but it was Paul who shone, going on to win Young Northern Theatre Organist of the year in 1981 at the age of 15.

At the age of 16 he was at a crossroads – a further three years’ study at music college or an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. The apprenticeship won the day, but his playing continued in the form of concerts, social clubs, backing singers and summer seasons in Blackpool. These days he runs a small building company and still finds time to play all over the country for clubs and festival. Organisers say he has a likeable personality and gives the audience what they want – a pleasant entertaining evening.
