CHARLOTTE Wych has taken centre stage in the local art world after she exhibited five eye-catching water colour paintings of flowers in Great Yarmouth last Thursday.

The 92-year-old has only been painting for the last ten years.

Mrs Wych spends several hours a day painting flowers in her Gorleston kitchen and she is now so confident of capturing the essence of her floral subjects that she has jokingly compared herself to Van Gogh.

But it was only after her son was so impressed by her paintings that the nonagenarian decided to exhibit some of her creations in the Priory Centre as part of Age Concern Yarmouth's 60th anniversary celebrations. It is hoped the display of paintings of sunflowers, white roses and lilies will inspire other older people to take up art.

She said: “I love painting as it keeps me busy. I choose flowers as I have never been taught how to paint the outdoors.

“I think it is rather nice I can exhibit some of my paintings. I think I am as good as Van Gogh - maybe I should not have said that.”

Mrs Wych has painted about 100 portraits of flowers from her kitchen - cum improvised studio.
