“YOU could have your name up in lights,” says Rose to her daughters in Gypsy, the show being performed by the original Dusmagrik Young People's Theatre Company at the Pavilion Theatre, Gorleston next week.

Set amid the worlds of vaudeville and burlesque in 1920's and 30's America, Rose, the epitome of the pushy, over-ambitious show business mother is determined her daughters June and Louise are going to be stars.

Rose manages to persuade candy salesman Herbie to be their agent and together with pet dog Chowsie they travel America performing their out-dated song and dance act in the dying days of vaudeville until June, sick of being made to act much younger than her years, elopes with one of the boys in the act.

Undeterred, Rose turns all her attention to Louise trying to make her into a carbon copy of her sister. Louise however has other ideas and proves she can be a success without her mother's help.

Taking on the role of Rose is Emma Riches who made such an impact as Eponine in last year's Les Misrables School Edition. She is joined by last year's lead Jamie Morgan as Herbie and making her debut in a leading role we have Clare Carter as the grown up Louise.

Sisters Alice and Emily Forder from Ormesby play Baby and Dainty June while their older brother Thomas plays would be song and dance man Tulsa.

With songs such as Everything's Coming up Roses and You Gotta Get a Gimmick, the music cries out for more than piano accompaniment so the group are delighted that Musical Director John Stephens has been able to assemble a band of musicians from all over Norfolk.

Gypsy is being performed in aid of Children in Need and runs from Wednesday to next Saturday, 7.30pm nightly, with a matine on the Saturday at 2pm. Tickets at 9 for adults and 5 for children are available from the theatre box office on 01493 662832 or book online at www.gorlestonpavilion.co.uk
