The quest is on to find a support act for Tony Hadley and his Big Band when they appear at the most talked-about gig of the summer at Somerleyton Hall, on August 15, his only UK date.

Hadley, who notched up 15 top 20 hits with Spandau Ballet including Gold, True and Communication, will be one of the judges in the competition, along with Somerleyton Hall owner Hugh Crossley.

Mr Crossley said: "We're looking for real magic. Bands can play any style of music but they must sing a cover of a Frank Sinatra song in keeping with Tony's Swinging True tour."

In addition to sharing the stage with the 1980s legend, and playing on one of the most prestigious stages in the country, the winning band will scoop a £500 prize for their school, band or organisation.

But the competition will be tough. Ahead of the long-awaited August gig, bands will have to make a shortlist of 12 after submitting CDs. The final dozen will face a sing off at Fritton House, Norfolk, on July 27 with the final four appearing on the night.

Tony Hadley will wow audiences with his 17-piece Sinatra-style jazz and blues band for one night only at Somerleyton Hall on August 15.

Somerleyton Hall's acre grounds are the ideal spot for a picnic concert. Tickets cost £27.50 (five to 15s £15) and are available on 01603 630 000. Doors open for picnics at 6.30pm.

CD entries should be sent to Band Competition, Somerleyton Estate Office, Somerleyton Hall, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 5QQ, and the CD should be fully labelled. The closing date for entries is July 20. Bands should be aged up to 18 only.

The Mercury will also be running a competition next month where there will be FREE tickets to the concert.
