YOUNGSTERS wanting to get a foothold in the local music scene should go along to an exciting new project next week.

The Yarmouth Rock music project will introduce young people to contemporary music in a safe, friendly, fun and exciting environment - and providing the necessary musical instruments with experienced tutors.

The first session, for youngsters aged 11 to 19 is on Monday evening at the Kings Centre, in Suffolk Road.

Spokeswoman Danielle Apps said: “This project will enable young people with varying skill levels from complete beginners to experienced musicians to interact with other young people, encouraging peer learning and sharing of musical experiences.”

She said the concept of the project evolved following consultation with young people in the borough.

They identified that access to contemporary musical instruments was an activity they were unable to participate in due to several factors such as, high cost of instruments, lack of practice facilities and tutors and no other young people to enjoy this experience with.

Organisers will provide the necessary equipment such as guitars, drum kit, bass guitar and amplification, to allow young people to have access to a range of musical instruments. Project tutors will encourage young people to work together in a collaborative format.

Danielle added: “Experience has shown that young people make the most progress when they are working in a 'band style' format sharing musical experiences and learning together.

“They will be encouraged to write their own music learning to play this and progressing to perform their own material at an annual showcase to family and friends.”

Recording equipment is available to document progress and record bands. The project is particularly interested in established youth bands and can offer practice and recording facilities.

Yarmouth Rock is on Monday from 6-8pm at the Kings Centre, Suffolk Road, Great Yarmouth
