WOULD you like to take part in what promises to be the biggest quiz competition ever held in the borough?

The popular pub quiz has been around for many years now, attracting many aficianados in pubs and clubs all over the district on a regular basis.

Now, the Rotary Club of Great Yarmouth is planning to take the popular pastime a huge stride forward in announcing this week details of a great new quiz competition - probably the most ambitious of its kind ever held in the area, and probably also destined to become the most prestigious. The club is looking for teams of four to compete in its new venture, a Grand Charity Quiz competition to be held at the Town Hall on March 7.

Teams can be entered in one of two categories, Family/Community and Business/Commerce. The winning team in each category will receive a trophy and there will also be prizes for members of both winning teams, as well as a certificate for each and every participant.

For those teams supremely confident they know the correct answer to a particular question, there will be opportunity to double their score by playing a Joker!

And there will also be refreshments - a buffet and soft drinks will be brought to your table during the interval, and a licensed bar will be open from 6pm.

Local broadcaster Tony Mallion will be quizmaster and the prizes will be presented by Miss Great Yarmouth, Holly Smith.

David Trowbridge, chairman of Rotary's foundation committee, said: “We aim to make it a great fun evening - and at the same time raise money for palliative care at the James Paget University Hospital and for Rotary charities.”

David stressed that the proceeds from the competition “every single penny raised” will be donated to the charities, thanks to the generosity of its main sponsor, Eastport.

He added: “We are very confident it will be a huge success, and if so it will become an annual event, with the trophy becoming the FA Cup of the local quiz scene!”

The entry fee for both categories has been set at £100 per team of four - and all of that, together with income from other sources including advertising, will go to the nominated charities.

The number of teams will be limited to 32, so early application is advised, and there will be room for a limited number of “supporters”.
