SCARECROWS are usually for scaring off a threat from the air, but in one village they attract hundreds of people!More than 90 scarecrows were dotted about the village of Martham last year and over the bank holiday weekend May 3 and 4, another Scarecrow Festival will be held as part of a massive line up of entertainment and fun.

SCARECROWS are usually for scaring off a threat from the air, but in one village they attract hundreds of people!

More than 90 scarecrows were dotted about the village of Martham last year and over the bank holiday weekend May 3 and 4, another Scarecrow Festival will be held as part of a massive line up of entertainment and fun.

On both days the scarecrows will be on display on various properties around the village and on the village green. There will also be a book sale and good quality nearly new clothes sale on the green and a treasure hunt around the village, entries available 10am to 7pm.

Other entertainments include craft and charity stalls and Doc Spinoff tricky cycles.

The Baptist Church service is at 11am, with refreshments 2pm to 5pm, the Methodist Church serve soup and refreshments from noon to 5pm, and St Mary's Church, from 2pm to 5pm, there is an exhibition of banners and tapestries and refreshments.

A songs of praise will be held on the Co-Op green at 5.30pm.

This event is supported by Martham Parish Council and a donation from the takings will be donated to St Mary's Church Hall Restoration Fund. The May Fair is on Thursday, April 30 to Monday, May 4 on the main village green. It is not too late to enter a scarecrow, call Julie on 01493 748547. The tower of St Nicholas' Church, in Great Yarmouth, will be open to the public on Bank Holiday Monday from 10am-4pm.

Visitors will be able to climb to the top of the tower and have the chance to see the 13 bells. There will be bell-ringing demonstrations during the day and the chance to have a go yourself. In the church there will be handbell ringing and refreshments will be served throughout the day.

On Bank Holiday Monday, May 4 Somerleyton Hall and Gardens and having a May Day Celebration with a full traditional brass band playing on the lawns between 1 and 3pm.

May Day is a time for families to have fun together celebrating the arrival of spring and the 12 acres of landscaped gardens at Somerleyton Hall are the perfect place to see nature's reawakening. Homemade light lunches and cream teas will be available in the Winter Garden Tearooms. Gardens open 10-5pm. Hall tours 11.30-3.30pm. Wrentham Brass Band playing 1-3pm. Adults �5, over 60's �4, children �3, hall tours are �3.25 extra.

The now annual Arts & Craft Event is in St Catherine's Church, Ludham over this weekend. The event will be open daily from 10am to 5pm (11am-5pm on Sunday) and refreshments will be available all day. One of the highlights will be a display and demonstrations by the Norfolk Countryside Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers who will be showing the process from sheep and lambs fleece(the sheep will be in the churchyard, just outside the church, where sheep shearing will also take place), through dying of the fleece to the final product, be it woven, crochet, knitted or felted.

There will also be workshops,w here for a modest donation, adults and children can try their hand at different skills eg spinning, weaving, carding wool. There will also be exhibits and demonstrations in pottery, water colour painting, photography, candle making, wood turning, abstract art, jewellery, basket making, feltmaking, oil painting and much, much more.

The event is part of A Day out in Broadland.

Ludham Fun Run is on Sunday. All ages are encouraged to take part and it is possible to walk as well as run. Registration is at 10am at Ludham Garage, in the centre of the village. Walkers start out at just before 10am, while runners start at 10.30am. Entry is �1 per person and this year the proceeds will be donated to Trolleys for PICU. These are specialised trolleys which are required for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. As in previous years, this charity was chosen by Issy Sale, the daughter of one of the Fun Run organisers, Jenni Sale, who herself received treatment at Addenbrooke's.

If you've a passion for cars then Caister is the place to be on Bank Holiday Monday.

Up to 200 cars will be waiting to take part in the Broadland MG Club's annual road trip - a 70-mile drive to a mystery location.

The cars and drivers will gather on the car park behind Caister Lifeboat Station for bacon rolls and hot drinks before setting off at timed intervals from 9am to 10.30am. This year the club members will be donating the �1,000 raised to Caister Lifeboat - last year it went to East Anglian Air Ambulance.
