Skateboarders and BMX riders are set to have their own skatepark for the summer holidays.

Designed by youngsters the 145,000 park at St Nicholas Recreation Ground is taking shape and enthusiasts will have the chance to try it out at the end of this month and take part in a competition marking the opening on July 25.

For Revolution Skate Squad, the youth group set up in South Yarmouth to develop the project it will be a milestone moment after campaigning for some affordable teenage facilities in the area.

The group held a demo day a year ago to get a feel for what other young people and residents thought about having a skate park. Since then the group has been project planning, applying for grants, interviewing contractors, working with local residents, holding design sessions and setting up an adult steering group to support the development of the project.

Now all the hard work is finally starting to pay off. Over the last two weeks diggers have been on site creating the concrete complex that is quieter and more durable than wood and metal parks.

The park is due to open this month and to celebrate their success the Squad is planning an official opening on July 25. Central to the event will be Skateboard/Bmx competitions, free for anyone to enter. For more information about the competition and event, or to find out more about the skatepark drop into the Comeunity Neighbourhood Centre on King Street, or call 01493 845920.
