IN A break from tradition, the Gorleston Theatre Company will be staging its spring musical at the Britannia Theatre, Great Yarmouth in two weeks time.

The musical directed and choreographed by Jayne King, features a host of memorable numbers including, We're in the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, and the title song of 42nd Street.

It tells the story of a humble, naïve young actress named Peggy Sawyer who has come to audition for a new Broadway musical. Unfortunately, due to her nervousness, Peggy arrives to the audition late and misses her chance to join the chorus. Luckily, Peggy soon catches the eye of the famous director, Julian Marsh, and he gives Peggy her big break. However, the show's aging leading lady, Dorothy Brock, quickly grows to dislike Peggy. On opening night, she falls and breaks her ankle. Panic spreads through the company, as the show is doomed for closure, until it is suggested that Peggy take the role. In only thirty-six hours, Peggy learns 26 pages, six songs and ten dance numbers and becomes a star.

The original film made in 1933 starred Bebe Daniels who was later to marry Hollywood film mogul Ben Lyon.

The all singing and all dancing well-loved musical 42nd Street will be performed at the Britannia Theatre at 7.30pm each evening on Thursday 22 to Saturday May 24 inclusive with a matinee performance at 2.30pm on the Saturday. Tickets are priced at £12, £10 concessions and £8 children and are available from the Britannia Theatre Box Office telephone 01493 842209 or online at www.britannia-pier.co.uk.
