Surprise symphony
TICKETS are selling well for the visit of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra to Great Yarmouth on Sunday, March 15. It's the third in a series of concerts staged by the SeaChange Arts Trust at the Hippodrome Circus and follows the sell out visit of cellist Julian Lloyd Webber with the Russian State Orchestra at the beginning of the month.

It's the third in a series of concerts staged by the SeaChange Arts Trust at the Hippodrome Circus and follows the sell out visit of cellist Julian Lloyd Webber with the Russian State Orchestra at the beginning of the month.
The Berlin Orchestra, who are residents at the city's concert hall, are bringing a programme featuring Haydn's "Surprise" and Mendelssohn's “Italian” symphonies together with the Beethoven Violin Concerto. Ernst Kovacic will be the soloist, using a 300 year old instrument.
“There's obviously a big appetite for large-scale classical music,” said SeaChange chief executive Joe Mackintosh. “It's been exciting bringing orchestras back to the Hippodrome after so many years and it was so thrilling to see the place packed out for the last one. We literally had to turn people away.”
That concert featured Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's younger brother, Julian, performing the Elgar Cello Concerto,.
Mr Mackintosh added: “Both the performers and audience really appreciated the unique experience of playing in this historic building with its superb acoustics and close contact with the listeners. It makes us even more excited about the next concert".

The Berlin Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Lothar Zagrosek, who has been with them for the past three years.
Haydn's Symphony Number 94 earned the nickname “Surprise” because of the loud “thwack” of the drum the composer added as an afterthought to the second movement. It was not, as some suggested at the time of the first performance in 1792, “a wish to wake up the ladies and make them jump.”
