A STRUMPSHAW teenager could soon be singing with joy if she reaches the final of a major X Factor-style talent competition.

Tasha Pyne, 13, of Long Lane, has reached the last 20 in the North London section of The Idol 2008 after completing a successful audition at Bedford Corn Exchange on September 6.

If the Acle High School pupil wins the regional final of the under-18 section on October 23, she will then go on to compete in the national final at Portsmouth Guildhall on November 29 for the chance to record her own CD.

Her mother Lesley, said: “She is remaining realistic and forever hopeful and I think she stands a good chance. She is over the moon to have reached the last 20.”

The teenager was joined by her airline pilot father Mike, 41, who played guitar when she sang The Corrs Run Away at her audition, but she will be singing a different song at the regional final.

Her musical influences include Katie Melua and girl band Sugababes.

Mrs Pyne added: “She started singing with her dad when she was 10 and then she discovered she could sing and she started auditioning for school productions.”

Tasha said: “It is a dream come true to have come this far, and I'm not too bothered about winning the competition.”

The competition, which is in its fourth year, was originally focused on the south coast, but has since grown to become a national contest involving 10,000 entrants all eager to impress a panel of five judges drawn from the music and entertainment industry.

Pop stars Dane Bowers, Liz McLarnon, of Atomic Kitten fame and former Steps star Lee Latchford Evans are among the judges casting an experienced eye over the contestants.
