GREAT Yarmouth will be a Golden Mile of smiles on Sunday when the East Coast Truckers parade along the seafront in what is reckoned a record-breaking convoy.

The annual event which gives special needs children a fun day out sees locals and trippers line the streets to wave and applaud the children as they sit proudly alongside the driver.

And this year's event is set to be extra special as the convoy celebrates its 25th anniversary with an extra-long parade of 100 trucks.

The event is the only one of its kind in the world and requires permission from several authorities for a rolling road block covering 68km.

The organisers have applied for Guinness world record status and the outcome is pending.

The truckers come from all over the UK to take part in the event, which is organised by East Anglian charity East Coast Truckers.

Ivan Hardy from East Coast Truckers, who has been involved with the charity since 2001, said: “Every year this special event reaches out to touch the lives of disadvantaged children across our region.

“This year will be even more significant as it's a tremendous milestone and will assemble the biggest fleet we've ever co-ordinated.

“We hope the people of Norfolk and north Suffolk will come out to support us on the day, as they do every year, and share in this memorable occasion”.

After leaving County Hall in Norwich at 10am, the convoy will travel straight to Pleasurewood Hills by driving along the A47 then the A12 going through Gorleston to Lowestoft.

At Pleasurewood Hills the children will enter the park to have fun on the rides and enjoy a lunchtime picnic, before heading off at 5.15pm to Yarmouth seafront.
